Fairland graduates reminisce, look forward to future
HUNTINGTON -- While some graduating seniors at Fairland High School in Proctorville, Ohio were looking back on the good times at school, others were busy looking toward the future.
More than 120 students lined up for the pomp and circumstance during the 60th Commencement Exercises at the high school Friday night.
Graduating senior Jevon Hayes said while he'll miss goofing off with his friends in the school's hallways, he's looking forward to beginning his college career at Marshall University. Hayes said he'll begin studying radiology in the fall in hopes of becoming an x-ray technician.
"I'm kind of happy and kind of sad at the same time," Hayes said. "I'm sad because I'm not going to see my friends everyday but some of them are coming to Marshall."
Senior Nick Mayo wasn't as sentimental.
"I'm pretty excited to be getting out of here," Mayo said. "I'm excited because now I'll have a lot more time to practice with my band, Without A Word. We'll probably get in at least three or four practices a week now."
Mayo said he's also signed up for some classes at Marshall Community and Technical College. After completing those classes, Mayo said he plans to transfer to Marshall and study photography.
Class President Holly Wilson spoke to her peers about the nervousness she felt coming to a new school. Now with a tinge of not knowing what to come, she drew comparisons of the fear she felt starting school and the anxiousness she felt now leaving school.
"I never thought my first day would be so much like my last," Wilson said.
