Blevins convicted on lesser charge
HUNTINGTON -- Geisha Miller asked to hug her son, Jesse Blevins, on Thursday, moments before deputies led him away in handcuffs, guilty of voluntary manslaughter and concealing a human body.
Elizabeth Cotton's mother, Joan, looked on from a few feet away and longed to do the same with her daughter, all the while knowing she and her daughter will never again share such an embrace.
Joan Cotton instead clung to a small sense of relief brought by a guilty verdict, which convicted Blevins of voluntary manslaughter in Elizabeth Cotton's July 28, 2009, stabbing death. Police found her body hours later stashed underneath the crime scene at 728 Jackson Ave.
The five-man, seven-woman jury deliberated for nearly five and a half hours over two days. They finally reached their decision near midday Friday. The notification came minutes after jurors sought clarification about how they should consider intent.
Blevins now faces the possibility of a 4- to 20-year prison stay. Cabell Circuit Judge Alfred Ferguson scheduled sentencing for March 19.
