Candidates file for public office as deadline looms

HUNTINGTON -- With the deadline to file for candidacy in West Virginia's Tuesday, May 8, primary election looming, nominees filed for public office throughout the state.

Republican Shelley Moore Capito filed for re-election to her District 2 U.S. House of Representatives seat.

On the state level, three candidates filed for election to the West Virginia House of Delegates. Democrat Helen Martin filed to run for a District 13 seat, and fellow Democrat Robert Alexander filed to run in District 17. Republican Randy Tomblin filed to run in District 19.

Democrat J.D. Beane also filed to run for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

In Cabell County, Democrat C.A. Adams filed to run for assessor, and Jeffrey L. Stephens, a Democrat, filed for county surveyor.

Four new candidates filed to run for magistrate. They are Republican Derek A. Artrip and Democrats David Beckett, Timothy (Tim) Fox and Johnny Ray Rice II.

In Huntington, Democrat William Alejandro Holland filed for the At-Large city council seat, and Bethann Houser Earl filed to run for the District 4 seat.

In Mason County, embattled Sheriff David Anthony II, a Democrat, filed for re-election. He will face seven challengers including Democrats Gregory Powers, James Will, Donnie Kapp and John Paul Casey and Republicans Gordon Clark, Curtis C. McConihay and Joseph Frank.

Democrat Bryan S. Cromley and Republican Craig Tatterson filed to run for prosecuting attorney, and incumbents Democrat Cheryl Miller Ross and Gail L. Roush filed for re-election as magistrates.

In the race to the Mason County Commission, Democrats Paul Wray and Gene Zopp will square off, and Garry Peck, Tracy Sturgeon Doolittle, Marketta Crum and Matthew Keefer will be on the Republican ballot.

Democrat Ron Hickman filed for re-election as assessor, and Democrat John M. Persinger filed to run for surveyor.

For the Mason County Board of Education, Mark T. Clark and Pamela J. Shwarz will face incumbent Michael "Mickey" Cotrill Jr. in District 1. In District 2, Greg Fowler, Jimmy Davis and Sheena Williams will vie for election, and incumbent Tom Nunnery will be up against William Capehart, Marty Reed and Cassi Heib in District 3.

Finally, Republican Bob Baird will seek re-election to the Western Conservation District Supervisor.

While candidacy filing papers can still be mailed in as long as they are postmarked by Saturday, Jan. 28, Friday was the last day to file for office in person for county and state elections. The deadline to file for Huntington's municipal primary is Tuesday, Jan. 31.
