Emergency crews force entry into burning home

January 28, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- No one was home when a fire broke out in a home in the 1100 block of 8th Street Friday night.

Cabell County dispatchers were alerted to a fire alarm at the residence at 8:12 p.m., but when firefighters arrived on the scene there were no immediate signs of fire.

In the midst of their attempts to contact the homeowner, firefighters discovered smoke coming from a window in the second floor of the structure, said Jan Rader, a captain with the Huntington Fire Department.

Rader said firefighters were concerned that someone could have been trapped inside the residence, so they forced entry in the home. There were flames coming from a room on the second floor of the residence, but they were able to extinguish the flames within a few minutes.

Rader said it appeared the homeowner was not at the residence at the time of the fire.

8th Street was closed for about an hour following the incident.
