Artists Series hosts scotch-tasting event

January 27, 2012 @ 10:00 PM

HUNTINGTON -- In its 75 year history, the Marshall Artists series has been able to bring the world to Huntington in the form of lecture, music and acting.

On Friday, the series brought that little taste of culture to town with one if its Kindred Spirits events in the form of a scotch-tasting at the Jameson Cigar Company, located in the shops at Heritage Station.

"Huntington has definitely gotten a lot of exposure to everything that's out there in the world from the series, said Angela Jones, director of marketing for the series. "I want people to walk away with some education about another culture, and I want them to have had a good time raising money for a good cause."

The scotch-tasting will go hand-in-hand with the other Kindred Spirits event, Uncorked!, an annual wine-tasting, which is scheduled for this spring. Both events are fundraisers for the series, and Friday's event was expected to raise between $5,000 and $7,500 for the series.

Friday's scotch-tasting was not necessarily new to the series, which has hosted tastings in the past, but it was the first event of its kind in Huntington in eight years for both the series and for Simon Brooking, North American master ambassador of Laphroaig, which is a single malt whiskey distilled on the coast of the Isle of Islay in Scotland.

"Tonight certainly is a nice night for drinking whiskey. It's cool out, but you won't feel the cold after you've been tasting whiskey for two hours as long as you take the time to sip it properly. We spend 10 years making the scotch, so we hope that you spend more than 10 seconds drinking it. It's about sipping and savoring it," Brooking said. "It's a cultural experience definitely. What other country has any kind of beverage named for it? Scotch really is an embodiment of Scotland."
