Quilt celebrates Rosie the Riveters

September 07, 2010 @ 10:55 PM

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- A quilt celebrating the West Virginia women, who became known as Rosie the Riveters by working in the factories while the men were away fighting in World War II, will be unveiled at West Virginia State University at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9.

Thursday's ceremony will include at least two Rosie the Riveters. One of those is Putnam County resident Nancy Siplle, who inspected airplane parts in Cincinnati.

The quilt is paid for, in part, by the memorial fund of Professor John D. Richards, who was a WVSU professor of sociology.

Thanks! Plain and Simple, a West Virginia nonprofit that trains veterans to manage projects that benefit people in their home community, is organizing the event.

Those scheduled to participate in the event include veterans, West Virginia State University administrators, faculty and students, the St. Albans Dance Academy with a "Rosie the Riveter" routine, and a representative of the West Virginia Labor History Week and Coalition.

The unveiling will take place in Room 103 inside Davis Fine Arts Center.

Other public events celebrating Rosie the Riveters include one to be held Thursday, Oct. 14.

An event will take place at Spring Valley High School in the morning, with a second at Marshall University in the afternoon. Details have not yet been announced.
