This Labor Day, less traffic, same increased enforcement
HUNTINGTON -- A nearly one percent drop in traveling will not affect enforcement plans for many police agencies this holiday weekend.
AAA forecasts nearly 34.38 million will travel 50 miles or more from home this Labor Day. That's down 0.9 percent from 2007.
State Police in West Virginia and surrounding states will increase enforcement. The Mountain State effort runs between Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
West Virginia will participate in two national campaigns, "Operation C.A.R.E." and "Over the Limit, Under Arrest." Those efforts increase police presence and focus on drunken driving enforcement.
Last year, five people died in vehicle accidents in West Virginia during the Labor Day weekend.
In Ohio, the Department of Transportation recorded more than 2,000 crashes during holiday weekend. More than 600 crashes caused injuries and 20 others caused fatalities.
