WINFIELD -- Putnam County Schools Developmental Screenings will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 at the Teays Valley Presbyterian Church on Teays Valley Road.
Children ages 2 1/2 to 4 will be screened in the areas of speech/language, hearing, vision, motor skills, social skills, self-help and cognition.

HURRICANE -- The descendants of Lucretia and Calavery Gibson will have their annual reunion at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane Creek Road, Hurricane.
Family and friends are invited to bring a covered dish to share for lunch and enjoy the fellowship.
SCOTT DEPOT -- The annual meeting of the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Those who have loved ones buried in the cemetery or have any connection with the cemetery are automatically members of the association and are urged to attend this meeting.
Contributions for the mowing and upkeep of the cemetery can be sent to Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association, c/o Joanne Smith, Secretary-Treasurer, 4129 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot, WV, 25560.
CULLODEN -- The James River CEOS Club, based in the Milton-Culloden area, will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8 at the home of Joyce Jimison.
The subject of the program will be "Documenting Your Family History," and will be led by Donna Rodvelt, who will also have a craft for all to enjoy.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An October event is planned to "scare up" some money for the American Cancer Society.
A Longaberger Boo Feast Tour will leave Putnam County on Oct. 25 and head to Longaberger country. Participants will have lunch at Tami Longaberger's House, get a Longaberger basket, transportation on a deluxe motor coach, breakfast, snacks, a goodie bag, games, door prizes and more for $110, which is non-refundable.
Participants will also go to the Longaberger Factory Store, Homestead, Woven Connections, as well as Dresden for additional shopping.

HURRICANE -- Lakeside Elementary will sell Charleston-area Entertainment Savings Books to raise money for supplies and programs at the school.
The book costs $25, and contains hundreds of coupons for local services, entertainment and dining.

KANAWHA CITY -- SoLife, the area-wide Christian singles group, is celebrating two years in Kanawha and Putnam counties.
The anniversary celebration and singles mixer will be at 7 p.m. today at Kings River Worship Center, 3705 MacCorkle Ave., S.E., Kanawha City.
All singles are invited to attend the evening of fun and fellowship. There will be a guest speaker, entertainment and refreshments.
Appalachian Children's Chorus hosting fall open auditions
CHARLESTON -- The Appalachian Children's Chorus will host open auditions at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7 at the University of Charleston's Keenan Hall.
Boys and girls in grades kindergarten through seven who love to sing are encouraged to attend. Children do not need to have a piece prepared for the audition. Auditions are a fun and positive experience for children, and children do not need to have prior vocal instruction or experience to join ACC.
Private auditions may also be arranged.
Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.
ACC is also starting a new older girls' choir for ladies in grades 10-12. The group will be directed by Emily Capece. Interested singers should contact Capece at ecapece@womansongchorale.com.

HURRICANE -- Vinyasa Yoga classes will begin Sept. 8 at the Hurricane Valley Community Center in Valley Park.
Vinyasa Yoga is a physical form of yoga that flows with the breath, according to a press release. The class combines strengthening and toning poses with stretching and relaxing poses.
Classes will be held from 6:45-8 p.m. Wednesday nights, Sept. 8-Nov. 19.
The Community Center will also offer Isshinryu Karate classes for ages 5 to adult, from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $35 per month.

TEAYS VALLEY -- The Putnam County Library will begin the Fall Story Hour on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in all the branches. They will meet at the following times:

ELEANOR -- The Eleanor Arts & Crafts Show is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, above the Eleanor Fire Department.

HURRICANE -- The Putnam County Parks & Recreation Commission and the Convention and Visitors Bureau will host a Shifty Fifties Car Show on Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Valley (Wave Pool) Park.
Registration will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Awards will be handed out from 3-4 p.m.
Guests are invited to bring a lawn chair and relax to music of the 1950s and '60s. There will be food for sale, along with special music and entertainment.

WINFIELD -- Feel like you're part of history and learn a little about the "olden days" of Putnam County by attending the living history drama, "Mary Ingles on the Virginia Frontier" and Encampment 2008.
The event will be held Sept. 27-28 at the Weiford Settlement in Winfield, with Student Days to be held Sept. 24-26.
The one-mile drama presentation of the living history of Mary Ingles on the Virginia Frontier will take place on a trail, where hikers will meet characters from the 1750s-1780s time period. Encampment 2008 will feature daily living and exhibits by artisans and craftsmen of the area.

HURRICANE -- Crafters are invited to share their wares at a craft show hosted by the Putnam County Parks & Recreation Commission on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The show will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Hurricane Valley Community Center by the Wave Pool.
Each vendor can reserve a 10-by-8-foot space with a 72-inch round table and two chairs. Outdoor spaces are also available. There will be no electric hook-ups, and reservations are not refundable. Space is limited.
Vendors can set up from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.

HURRICANE -- Area families are invited to enjoy cinema under the stars with two upcoming movie nights hosted by the Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission.
Bring your lawn chairs to Valley Park in Hurricane on Sept. 12 and County Park in Eleanor on Sept. 13. Movies will begin at dark, and concessions will be provided.

POCA -- Poca High School's show choir, Visual Volume, will sponsor a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Saturday, Sept. 13. at Poca High School.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the games starting at 6 p.m. All prize baskets will be worth at least $50, and all baskets come with protectors.
The $20 entrance fee buys 20 games, plus four optional bonus games for specialty baskets. Concessions will also be served.
Amos Plant to sponsor St. Jude Golf Outing
HURRICANE -- Appalachian Power's John E. Amos Plant will sponsor its second annual "Drive For a Cure" golf tournament to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on Sept. 29 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.
In an effort to raise awareness of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases, each hole at the event will be in honor of, or in memory of a St. Jude patient, most of whom are West Virginians.
There will be various contests and prizes including a chance to win $10,000. There will also be a post-tournament buffet, raffles, silent auction and awards.

City of Nitro plans events for Harvest Dayz
NITRO -- The city of Nitro will celebrate Harvest Fair Dayz throughout the month of September.
Entry forms are now available for the following events: Baby pageant (ages 6 months-6 years), car and cycle show, booth rentals, craft vendors, antiques vendors, pie eating contest participants, horse shoe tournament participants, two on two basketball tournament, 3K walk/5K run, and parade participation.
The Harvest Fair Dayz Baby Pageant will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 in the Nitro High School Auditorium and the winning babies will be featured in the parade to be held on Sept. 13. All other events will take place Saturday, Sept. 13 throughout the City of Nitro and the Nitro City Park. There will also be a city-wide residence and business fall yard decor contest.
