Buffalo student selected for Macy's parade
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- A Buffalo High School student has been asked to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but she needs some help to get there.
Amanda Young has been selected to represent the state of West Virginia in the 2008 Macy's Great American Marching Band, which will lead Santa Claus into New York City's Herald Square during the parade on Nov. 27, 2008 -- the 82nd anniversary of the Macy's parade.
The Buffalo High School Music Boosters are raising money to send Young and her chaperone to the Big Apple.
Students were selected based on their musical ability and past achievements. Amanda is a senior at Buffalo High School and is currently ranked first in her class. Her honors include the John Philip Sousa Award, National Honor Society, WVU Invitational Honor Band and she has been first chair percussionist in the Region III WV All-Area Band and the Putnam All-County Band the last three years. She is also a member of the Bison varsity softball and basketball teams.
Young was chosen from among students from more than 14,000 high schools across the United States.
Buffalo Band Director Mark Hopkins said he is proud of Young.
"The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the highest honors a high school musician can experience. She has worked very hard to earn this opportunity to march with this outstanding group of students from all over the country. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
The parade is traditionally viewed by 2.5 million live spectators and more than 50 million TV viewers watching the broadcast live on NBC.
The Macy's band will be directed by Dr. Richard Good of Auburn University and Ohio State University's Dr. Jon Woods. The band will be complemented by approximately 50 flags and dancers choreographed by Greg Lagola of the famed Cadets Drum Corp of Pennsylvania.
The students will also have the opportunity to attend workshops led by Scott Lang, founder of Scott Lang Leadership Seminars. The workshops will focus on leadership and encourage students to achieve their maximum potential.
In addition to marching in the parade, the participants' package plans will include air transportation arranged by National Travel, meals, lodging and New York City sightseeing. The cost for airfare, room and board and sightseeing for the weeklong event is $2,500.
