A closer look at the University of Wisconsin
This Big 10 university was founded in 1848. The school's mascot, Bucky Badger, is one of the most recognizable in college athletics. Bucky was created in 1940 after, according to legend, the university had tried to use a live badger at home football games, but the animal was too fierce to control and was given to a local zoo.

Cost: $19,030 per year for residents, $33,280 for out-of-state students.
Courses: The school has more than 4,200 undergraduate classes in 160 majors, and numerous post-graduate programs.
Notable students: Vice President Dick Cheney; author and poet bell hooks; aviator Charles Lindbergh (did not graduate); Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty; architect Frank Lloyd Wright (did not graduate).
