Italian Society of the Tri-State hosts meeting
HUNTINGTON -- The Italian Society of the Tri-State will hold a public meeting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Picnic Shelter of Harveytown Park to review plans for the first in a series of bocce courts in the area.
Ralph Rozzi, construction contractor in Ona, says the idea of multiple courts surfaced at an organizational meeting of the society in January. The society is working with the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District to plan locations and tournament-grade construction.
"We want that quality of construction so that we can eventually attract bocce tournaments to the Tri-State," Rozzi said in a prepared release from the organization. "We intend to work closely with county commissions, starting with Cabell."
The game is sometimes described as the origin of today's bowling. There is the story that Bocce was so popular with Roman soldiers when fighting Carthage in the Tunic Wars that Emperor Charles IV banned it so full attention could be given to the business of war, according to a release from the organization.
