Salvation Army whips up Thanksgiving dinner for hundreds
HUNTINGTON -- Hundreds of people of all ages sat down for an early Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday at the Salvation Army Community Center.
Salvation Army Capt. Bob Mullins estimated more than 400 people attended the dinner, and an additional 300 meals were sent out to other families for Thanksgiving. More than 100 people also volunteered at the event.
"It was great," Mullins said. "The people were extremely appreciative."
Tough economical times have hurt more people this year, sending many residents to seek help from the Salvation Army, Mullins said.
"This is probably one of the highest numbers that we've had, and I think the economy has had a definite effect on it," he said.
Last month, the Salvation Army provided more than $26,000 in utility assistance and more than 125 food orders to families in need.
While the Thanksgiving dinner was a success, Mullins said the Salvation Army continues to need donations to help around Christmastime, too. He said the public can give to red kettles throughout the area to help get people the food they need and keep their lights on.
"It takes a lot of pennies and nickels and dimes and dollars," he said.
