HUNTINGTON -- Today through Thursday, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees will be meeting for a state convention at the Ramada Limited on Hal Greer Boulevard.

Huntington will greet members of 17 different West Virginia NARFE chapters from across the state.

"It's been really hectic getting everyone registered today," said Dwight Smith, president of Huntington's NARFE chapter.

Yesterday the group was scheduled for a tour of the Heritage Farm Museum and a round of golf. After touring and golfing away any travel woes, the group shall begin business this morning with board meetings, committee meetings and business sessions.

The NARFE is a federal interest group that seeks to advance legislative measures for better retirement benefits for government employees. They also help members of the organization obtain their benefits.

"We basically work on keeping Congress from taking our money from us," said Smith.

According to the organization's Web site, the group supports Senate Bill 210, a piece of legislation that protects the retirement benefits of West Virginia Deputy Sheriffs.

"Our main concern right now is trying to boost our dwindling membership," said Smith.
