Get Healthy Tri-State: Holiday habits add to new-year weight gain
The holiday season is almost over, and by the end of the fun and festivities, a few extra pounds can often be found just in time for the start of a new year. However, if a few simple recommendations are followed, the holiday season can lead into a healthy new year with less stress from weight gain in the days of old.
Increasing or maintaining physical activity levels can be a great way to reduce weight gain during this high risk season. Incorporating physical activity into a busy schedule is easier said than done, so a few recommendations include dancing or exercising to your favorite holiday music or taking a walk around the neighborhood to view all the holiday decorations.
Lack of physical activity is not the only reason people tend to gain weight over the winter holiday season -- treats add to this as well.
Parties, family gatherings and the everyday office setting are a few of the many examples of places to be careful. If planning to attend a big party, eat small meals throughout the day, which will leave you less hungry once you arrive at the party. Choose a balanced plate that is half vegetables and fruits and aim to get a good source of protein as well. Don't forget, calories from beverages can really add up, so go easy on these too.
Making a conscious effort to eat well and maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the holiday season will yield positive results. Laughing and making memories is what really makes this season worthwhile, so try to focus less on food and more on friends and family.
