HUNTINGTON -- State, county and local authorities conducted underage alcohol compliance checks at 33 retailers this week in Cabell County.

Five retailers failed the check and sold alcohol to underage buyers, who were cooperating in an undercover capacity for area police. Citations were issued to the sales clerks, according to information provided by the Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership.

Those in non-compliance were Huntington retailers Giovanni's Crossroads Mini Mart at 863 Norway Ave. and Par Mar No. 36 at 2207 8th Ave. Elsewhere authorities cited One Stop No. 532 at Interstate 64 and Route 13 in Milton; Little General Store No. 801 at 2634 U.S. 60 and Fudges Creek Road in Ona; and Little General No. 806 at 5877 Davis Creek Road in Barboursville.

Compliant establishments in Huntington were: CVS No. 4425 at 447 W. Washington Ave.; Go Mart No. 46 at 1006 Washington Ave.; Big Vern's Carryout at 585 W. 5th St.; Kroger No. 782 at 19 7th Ave.; Rich Oil No. 3968 at 201 Bridge Street; Marathon Food Center No. 169 at 401 Bridge Street; One Stop No. 516 at 1413 U.S. 60 E.; Par Mar No. 37 at 3211 Washington Blvd.; Sun Express Food Mart at 3175 U.S. 60; Clark's Pump N' Shop at 1584 Hal Greer Blvd.; Go Mart No. 70 at 1403 16th Street; Rite Aid No. 950 at 1138 Hal Greer Blvd.; Prima 7-11 No. 5412 at 1901 5th Ave.; Speedway No. 9750 at 1531 6th Ave.; Clark's Pump N' Shop at 601 5th Ave.; and One Stop No. 501 at 501 8th Street.

Compliant establishments in unincorporated areas of Huntington: Clark's Pump N' Shop at 6067 Ohio River Road; Speedway No. 9926 at 5702 U.S. 60 and Pea Ridge Road; Smokin Sam's No. 4 at 4231 Hughes Branch Road; and Big Kmart No. 3425 at 5636 U.S. 60.

Compliant establishments in Milton were: Rich Oil No. 3964 at 1069 U.S. 60 E.; Go Mart No. 55 at 323 Summers Addition; and Rite Aid Discount Pharmacy No. 3311 at 1010 S. Main St.

Compliant establishments in Barboursville were: Drug Emporium at No. 3 Mall Road; Wal-Mart Supercenter No. 5296; Prima 7-11 No. 5424 at 6417 U.S. 60; Kroger's No. 788 at 6360 U.S. 60; and Skagg's Mart at 5967 U.S. 60.

The Huntington Police Department conducted compliance checks within its jurisdiction. The Cabell County Sheriff's Office handled checks elsewhere in the county.

The West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration also participated with both agencies. The operation was financed with money from the West Virginia Governor's Highway Safety Office.
