Pearl Harbor anniversary commemorated with special ceremony Dec. 7

HUNTINGTON -- The public is invited to attend a special Pearl Harbor Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena to mark the 67th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Following the ceremony, participants are invited to the 10th Street entrance of Harris Riverfront Park, where veterans will throw wreaths in the river in honor of lost veterans. The event is sponsored by the Huntington Detachment 340, Marine Corps League.

Pearl Harbor survivors will be introduced after opening remarks by Hershel "Woody" Williams, the only living recipient of the Metal of Honor in West Virginia. Ken Hechler, who served lengthy periods as a U.S. representative in Congress and West Virginia's secretary of state, will be guest speaker.

The program will move to Harris Riverfront Park. A 21-gun salute and taps will be provided by American Legion, Post 16, Veterans Honor Guard.

Representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard also will attend.
