February 09, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- There's a weight loss challenge program now offered that raises funds for the Huntington Area Food Bank.

The Pound for Pound Challenge is a national campaign promoting healthier lifestyles by allowing participants to pledge a weight-loss goal while raising funds to fight hunger.

For every pound pledged, a 14-cent donation is distributed by Feeding America to the Huntington Area Food Bank. According to a release from the food bank, that donation is equivalent to a pound of groceries.

The Huntington Area Food Bank serves 91,000 people each month, the release said. It currently is 140th place in the campaign and has pledged more than 8,500 pounds with 266 team members registered. Gassaway, W.Va., is in 69th place, having 617 team members who pledged 19,000 pounds.

As a state, West Virginia is in 37th place.

The challenge coincides with the NBC program "The Biggest Loser" and wraps up June 30.
