Pullman shoppers treated to holiday sing-along
HUNTINGTON -- Shoppers in Downtown Huntington were invited to sing-along to their favorite Christmas tunes Friday night at Pullman Square.
Downtown Live, a subcommittee of the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Partners hosted a holiday sing-along from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Songbooks were handed out to the Pullman Square crowd and everyone was invited to sing their holiday favorites.
"We thought that along with the gingerbread house competition we could host a sing-along to generate a little bit of fun for the downtown shoppers," said Shawn Bresnahan, a member of the Downtown Partners and owner of the Le Cook Store. "We want everyone to sing with us and we even invited some special guests."
Among the performers who came out to lead the audience of singers were the Ironton High School Varsity Singers, Guy "Elvis" Weatherholt, Enslow Park Presbyterian Church and the Young Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Rainbow Music Ministry. Angel Plant, the director of the Rainbow Ministry said the event was a wonderful experience for her youth singing group.
"We are like a big family," Plant said. "It's been such a wonderful journey. It's great to see all of these gifts from the really young to the older singers."
The Rainbow Ministry is a group of 11 children, ages 5 through 14, who perform at numerous events throughout the year. Plant said her goal is to expose the children to different public events like the sing-along at Pullman Square.
Margie Scites, of Huntington, said she heard about the sing-along and wanted to attend so she could listen and sing-along.
"I think it's really fun, we really enjoy the opportunity to just come out and have fun," Scites said.
Radio announcers from various Clear Channel radio stations were also present to host the singing and even lead a few songs.
Bresnahan said he hopes the first-time event will become an annual celebration to spice up the holidays in downtown Huntington.
