Power outage reported on MU's campus

Sep. 02, 2013 @ 12:15 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Marshall University campus and several businesses in the area experienced a major power outage Sunday night after four utility poles were damaged on the Joan C. Edwards Stadium parking lot in the area of 4 1/2 Alley between 20th and 21st streets, affecting several transformers.

Motorists were advised late Sunday night to avoid the area around Marshall's campus.

Emergency crews were directing traffic away from the area. Workers from Appalachian Power arrived on the scene about 11 p.m. Sunday to repair the damage.

The cause of the outage and damage to the poles was unknown as of Sunday night, said Capt. Forrest Marshall with the Huntington Fire Department.

He said it's possible that a vehicle struck one pole, causing a chain reaction, but it was still under investigation at press time.

Crews were expected to work through the night to restore power.

No classes are meeting for Monday's Labor Day holiday, but students living in residence halls were affected.
