Allegheny Power seeks rate increase
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Allegheny Power is asking the West Virginia Public Service Commission to raise its rates by about 18 percent.
The company made the request on Friday. If approved, a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours would pay $86 a month beginning Jan. 1, up from $73.
The subsidiary of Allegheny Energy blames a 236 percent rise in coal prices since 2007, saying it needs to recover an additional $173 million in fuel and purchased costs.
The company, which has about 490,000 customers in West Virginia, also operates power plants and utilities in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
The PSC also is reviewing requests from seven of West Virginia’s largest natural gas companies seeking rate increases of up to 46 percent.
