Prom special for senior who takes dad as date
Cabell Midland High School senior Ashley Nicely, center, has her photos taken with her father, Troy, at left, prior to the school’s themed “Dancing with the Stars.” Nicely said since she was a little girl she’d always wanted to take her father to with her. “It’s an honor that she wants me to go with her,” said Troy. “There were a lot of guys to ask her, and she picked me, and that’s pretty cool.”

ONA -- This year's prom was a bit different for the Nicely family.
Cabell Midland senior Ashley Nicely still bought a dress, and she still spent nearly all day Saturday getting ready. But the rest of the house wasn't quite the same.
That's because Ashley Nicely's father, Troy, was also getting ready for the prom. He was his daughter's date.
"I've always wanted to take my dad to my senior prom ever since I was a little girl," Ashley Nicely said. "I really look up to him. He sets a great example, and there's no one I'd rather take than him."
And she admitted that she had options. She said she turned down a handful of guys from school so she could fulfill her childhood wish.
Troy Nicely, a youth pastor, said he was surprised but honored to take his daughter.
Ashley's mom and Troy's wife, Stephanie, also had a hand in the festivities, helping two of her favorite people get ready for a special night at the prom.
Cabell Midland's theme was "Dancing with the Stars," and Ashley Nicely said she was thankful to dance with the star in her life.
After graduation, Ashley Nicely will spend the summer with friends and family before heading to Costa Rica for two semesters studying Spanish and the Bible.
While Cabell Midland celebrated its prom at the school out in Ona, the sidewalks of downtown Huntington were ablaze with formal wear, as St. Joseph Central Catholic High School also conducted its prom Saturday night.
Couples posed for pictures in Pullman Square before making their way to the prom, which took place at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
