Citizen responsibilities
Authorities recommend citizens take the following steps to prevent gun trafficking.
SERIAL NUMBERS: Gun owners should record serial numbers for every weapon they own. This can help police return the firearm if it is recovered. It also helps them quickly identify the gun as stolen when they trace the weapon after an incident.
KNOW THE BUYER: Any private citizen selling a firearm should know the purchaser. They should have personal knowledge of whether the buyer's background includes mental illness or violence.
PROSECUTE: Victims of violent crime should assist authorities in prosecuting each case. Failure to follow through on an assault charge or a domestic violence case can allow an otherwise dangerous person to walk free. The dismissed charges will not appear in a background check, and the person will be allowed to purchase a firearm.
