Governor visits Weed and Seed Office for Earth Day

April 23, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin urged residents to take responsibility for the environment Wednesday during an Earth Day observance.

"Helping the environment doesn't take a great deal of effort, but it takes participation by all of us," Manchin said. "You can start in your own homes. We can all do something."

Manchin helped plant a tree at the city's Weed and Seed Office on 10th Avenue, the center of a neighborhood redevelopment project.

It was one of many Earth Day events across the country, including a speech by President Barack Obama, in Newton, Iowa, where noted the importance of wind energy for the future and set a goal for wind to generate as much as 20 percent of the U.S. electricity demand by 2030.
