Mock accident presented to students
PROCTORVILLE, Ohio -- A mock accident was presented to juniors and seniors at Fairland High School Thursday morning by St. Mary's Medical Center and its trauma services department.
The program, "Shattered Dreams," showed a car accident in which a teen driver who had been drinking crashed and killed two of his friends. One died on the scene and the other in the trauma center.
One of the teens was shown lying on the hood of the car, having been thrown through the windshield because she wasn't wearing a seat belt.
"I could see (the students') faces," said Connie Campbell, trauma manager at St. Mary's who helped organize the event. "They were impacted."
Emergency services, the HealthNet helicopter and crew, Ohio State Patrol and Rome Volunteer Fire Department all participated in the accident scene.
Afterward, students went into the school and heard a presentation by Dr. Chad Smith, St. Mary's emergency room physician. He gave a slide show presentation on the dangers of drinking and driving and failure to use seat belts.
Smith talked to students about actual injuries people have suffered from accidents, including paralysis and lost limbs. Parent Sherri Hamilton spoke about losing her son in an alcohol-related crash.
A similar mock accident and presentation will take place from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Cabell Midland High School.
