April 26, 2009 @ 11:00 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Last Wednesday, on Earth Day, six schools were recognized as winners of Goodwill's School Recycling Project.

Each winning school received a cash prize based on the amount of paper and cardboard collected during the school year.

Central City Elementary repeated as the first-place winner, keeping the revolving trophy and earning $1,500. Students there collected 7,673 pounds of paper and cardboard.

Trophies and cash prizes also went to the Southside Elementary, 4,795 pounds, $1,000; Altizer Elementary, two tons, $750; Enslow Middle School, 3,261 pounds, $500; Cabell Midland High School, 2,867 pounds, $250; and Nichols Elementary, 2,494, $125.

Nineteen schools participated in the program, which was an increase of 13 over the program's inaugural year.

Goodwill's program is in partnership with the W.Va. Department of Environmental Protection, the Cabell County Solid Waste Authority and the Cabell County School District. The awards were sponsored by Goodwill's Corporate Green Team: First State Bank, Fifth Third Bank, The Huntington National Bank, Guaranty Bank, Community Trust Bank, BB&T Bank, United Bank, and First Sentry Bank.
