Destruction reigns at demolition derby

November 28, 2009 @ 10:55 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Thousands of fans were treated to a night of destruction at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena, which hosted the first Indoor Demolition Turkey Derby.

Some in the front row also took home souvenirs, mostly dirt that was flung from spinning tires by the more than 60 drivers who participated in the derby.

The Milliron family sat near the top of the arena. They weren't concerned about dirt because they came for the loud sound of revving engine and the sight of smashing steel.

"We just enjoy this," said Bill Milliron of Pomeroy, Ohio. "We love it as a family."

Milleron's children and other relatives were among those watching and cheering as drivers rammed their stripped-down cars into each other.

Several area drivers participated in the derby, include Chesapeake resident Nick Catalogna. The 14-year veteran said his step-father drove and got him interested as a teen. He also said it's a great stress reliever.

"It's our sport," he said, adding that he enjoys getting a chance to perform for the home crowd. "It's truly exciting. One heck of an adrenaline rush."

Arena marketing director Amanda Weiss said they host an annual demolition derby in the spring, which draws near sellout crowds and plenty of drivers. She said they had an open weekend and decided to do a fall show.

The spring derby date is March 20, 2010.
