ResCare bazaar raises money for future craft workshop tools

November 28, 2009 @ 10:55 PM

LESAGE -- ResCare and Green Acres Regional Center raised enough money during its Christmas Bazaar and Craft Show on Saturday to purchase new tools for a craft workshop.

Vendors from around the Tri-State brought their wares to the show at the facility in Lesage. Items for sale included homemade rugs, candy, baskets, crafts and more. Nikki Gibson, vocational director for ResCare, said the $400 raised from the event will go toward purchasing saws that will be used by ResCare participants.

The Lesage facility, which is split between ResCare and Green Acres, gives developmentally disabled people from Mason, Lincoln, Cabell and Wayne counties an environment to learn, work and live. ResCare is in charge of the vocational program that provides work experience training for men and women with developmental disabilities.

Through hands-on learning, participants with developmental disabilities gain basic, academic and functional living skills as well as vocational training and work experience.

Gibson said program participants will work with ResCare employees to create crafts for next year's show. The money raised from craft sales will go back into the program, Gibson said.

"The vendor response has been extraordinary, especially for a first-year show," Gibson said. "Everyone's very pleased, happy and in the Christmas mood."

Members of one of the ResCare departments also ran a table to raise money for a Christmas party for program participants. The table was filled with gift baskets, homemade crafts and food. The items for sale were either donated by program participants, their families or ResCare employees, said Sharon Pitts with ResCare.

Pitts said the Christmas party for all 185 program participants will be Dec. 18.

"It's very rewarding when you see their faces on Christmas," Pitts said.

Also scheduled for the craft show were performances by the Black Berry Jam bluegrass band and Oak Hill Church.
