Missing woman found dead in Big Sandy River
LOUISA, Ky. -- The body of 79-year-old Florence Tkack was spotted around 11:40 a.m. Saturday morning in the Big Sandy River.
A volunteer searching the bank found her, said Harold Slone, director of Emergency Management in Lawrence County, Ky.
"We focused on the river based on indications from the K-9 dogs," Slone said.
Tkack had been missing since Wednesday night, when she walked away from the home of her caregiver's relatives on McClure Branch Road near Louisa. Tkack suffered from Alzheimer's.
Slone said more than 150 people helped during the two-and-a-half day search, most on a volunteer basis. He also wanted to thank the many fire departments, rescue squads, helicopter crews and officials from neighboring counties who put aside their Thanksgiving plans to search for Tkack.
He also passed on his condolences to the family and thanked them for providing volunteers with breakfast on Saturday. Slone said family members had left the area shortly before the Tkack was found. The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office notified them, Slone said.
Tkack's body was taken by the county coroner, and an autopsy will be performed.
