HUNTINGTON -- The League of Women Voters of the Huntington Area held a movie showing Monday afternoon at the West Library of "Iron Jawed Angels," a film about early 20th century suffragists' struggles to gain the right to vote.

Helen Gibbins, the organization's president, said it is still very important to remember that women in the United States have only had the right to vote for 92 years.

"We want people to remember it wasn't an easy thing to get the right to vote," Gibbins said. You have the right to vote, so you need to get out and vote."

The historical film made by HBO tells the story of how women's suffrage split in two, with the new states out West giving women the right to vote and a younger group who picketed the White House to get people's attention. The picketing did happen, Gibbins said, and some women were thrown in jail for it.
