HUNTINGTON -- Severe weather warnings were issued to the Huntington area by the National Weather Service early Sunday morning before thunderstorms and high mile-per-hour winds swept across the Tri-State, leaving debris in its wake.

Seventy mile-per-hour winds and a severe thunderstorm moving from Olive Hill, Ky., through the region caused damage to trees, homes and businesses. The National Weather Service also issued a tornado watch, which expired at 3 p.m. Sunday, for more than a dozen counties in the Tri-State.

Following the tornado watch, the National Weather Service also issued a wind advisory for southeast Kentucky. Strong, gusty winds were expected from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The storm has traveled through the region toward North Carolina and Virginia.

Many of the streets in Huntington are littered with debris from trees. In several areas, trees have been knocked down by the strong winds and have blocked sidewalks and roadways.

More rain is in the forecast later this week.
