HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Police Department arrested a man Saturday evening following a 20-minute car chase through several Huntington neighborhoods, according to Cabell County 911 Dispatch.
Dispatch said they received a call about the driver at 4:56 p.m. after police attempted to make a traffic stop near the intersection of 17th Street and 11th Avenue. The driver drove from Huntington's south side toward the downtown area then finally to the West End, where he was apprehended. When the driver was stopped, police found a child in the back strapped into a car seat. The child was not injured.
The dispatcher indicated the driver was "driving in circles" around town and never went above 30 miles per hour.
Brent Alexander Gist was charged with felony fleeing while DUI and felony child neglect with the risk of injury. He was also charged with two counts of domestic battery, driving on a suspended license, driving without a proof of insurance, obstructing and fleeing, all misdemeanors.
Dispatch said police made the stop on the 500 block of 5th Street West between Washington and Virginia avenues. The dispatcher was unable to indicate if the driver crashed or was boxed in by the police. He received minor injuries and was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital.
At least five marked police cars were pursuing the speeding vehicle at the height of the chase, according to a witness.
