Parents thankful for free museum KidsArt program
HUNTINGTON -- The children who participate in the weekly KidsArt program at the Huntington Museum of Art get to work on projects and participate in theater.
It's a combination of learning and fun that also is free, which parents really appreciate.
"I think it's great for the community," said Huntington mom Kristi Stephens, who has brought her son, Isaac Sweeney, to Saturday KidsArt for the past two years. "Who wouldn't want to enroll their children in a cultural class, but who can afford it? This is free and it's great. Isaac loves it."
Saturday, about a dozen kids worked on a tessellation, a collection of plane figures that fills the plane with no overlaps and no gaps. One may also speak of tessellations of the parts of the plane or of other surfaces.
The kids also learned rhythm and beat with dance instructor Traci Fisher.
"Just being around art does a lot for a person," Fisher said. "It enriches their lives."
Mark and Patty Osborne of Ashland found out about the program online and decided to let their 7-year-old son Branden give it a try.
"It's wonderful," said Patty Osborne, who is a teacher in Boyd County.
She said students today seem starved for culture, raising the importance to what the museum provides.
"We'll be back," she added.
The program, for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. each Saturday in the Education Gallery.
Sponsorship and support from Heiner's and B'Nai B'rith Lodge No. 795 mean there is no admission fee.
The museum is located at 2033 McCoy Road. For more information, call 304-529-2071.
