Prosecutor: W.Va. poker tournament OK
MARLINTON, W.Va. (AP) — A planned weekend poker tournament at a West Virginia resort can go ahead without concern from local law enforcement.
Pocahontas County Prosecutor Walt Weiford said Friday that he’s satisfied that the event, scheduled for Saturday at Snowshoe Resort, does not violate state gambling laws.
West Virginia Lottery Commission general counsel John Melton and State Sen. Andy McKenzie had both said they thought the tournament, which offers a trip to Las Vegas as the grand prize, may violate the law.
But Weiford said because the participants in the tournament aren’t putting up money to enter, it doesn’t run afoul of the law.
A call to the Lottery Commission was not immediately returned Friday.
