New Veterans Memorial Park design expected to be approved

January 21, 2013 @ 11:41 PM

HUNTINGTON -- The Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, and may decide on a design for the new Veterans Memorial Park.

The park will be located on the northeast corner of the property along 4th Avenue between 26th and 27th streets, where Marshall University's new soccer stadium complex will be built.

A park was part of the agreement in selling the former Veterans Memorial Field House and adjacent property to Marshall.

Executive Director Kevin Brady said the he expects board members to approve a design for the park at the meeting, which will take place in the Room With a View at Ritter Park's rose garden. He said the groundwork is done, and all they have to do is pour concrete. The contractor will install the planned shelter and playground.

He expects to break ground in late spring and have it completed in June or July. It will be paid for with proceeds from the sale of the Field House and revenue from the auction of Field House memorabilia.
