Frigid weather expected overnight
HUNTINGTON -- Tri-State residents should brace for a big chill Tuesday and some of the coldest temperatures of the year overnight, with a low of about 6 degrees expected.
The National Weather Service predicted a high of about 20 degrees for Tuesday during the day, and a wind chill reading as low as minus 3. Tuesday night temperatures should drop into the teens after sundown and then into single digits early Wednesday.
The cold weather is expected to continue Thursday and Friday with highs in the 30s, then dropping again on Saturday with a high of only 25 and an overnight low of 13. Chances for snow flurries and perhaps some rain and sleet exist for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
For homeowners, the dip into more frigid temperatures means they may want to take precautions to avoid frozen water pipes.
West Virginia American Water suggests homeowners should eliminate sources of cold air near lines that are most vulnerable to freezing. Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or use electrical heat tracing wire; newspaper or fabric may also work. For outside meters, keep the lid to the meter pit closed tightly.
If you have pipes that are vulnerable to freezing, the water company suggests, allow a small trickle of water to run overnight to keep pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures.
Pet owners also should make sure their pets are protected from the cold. Veterinarians suggest that they be kept inside during frigid temperatures, particularly shorter-haired dogs.
