Greenup voters reject alcohol proposal
GREENUP, Ky. — Greenup County voters turned down a proposal to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in a special election Tuesday, according to Greenup County Clerk Pat Hieneman.
Greenup has prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages for more than 50 years and that will continue. Voters rejected the proposal by a total of 4,872 against and 3,830 supporting the proposal.
Under Kentucky law, those supporting the sale of alcoholic beverages can't put the issue back before voters for three years, Hieneman said Tuesday night.
Voters in the city of Russell approved alcoholic beverage sales, but only on a limited basis, several years ago.
Sales of alcohol are permitted at restaurants with a seating capacity of 100 as an incentive to get restaurant chains with alcohol sales to locate in the city. The city of Russell also allows sales only in certain restaurants; no bars or convenience store sales are permitted.
Thus far, no restaurants have qualified.
The only location with legal sale of alcoholic beverages in Greenup County is the Bellefonte Country Club. The club applied for an exemption permitted to certain golf courses. The precinct in which the club is located approved the sales.
