Tax assistance program available at Boyd County Public Library

HUNTINGTON -- The Boyd County Public Library will be hosting a Tax-Aide Program for the 2013 tax season.

The program will take place from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday between Tuesday, Feb. 5, and Wednesday, April 10. The program will be available at the Kyova Branch.

The assistance is for those in the middle- or low-income categories, with special attention to those ages 60 years and older.

Those using the program for assistance need to bring all applicable tax documents, in order to receive assistance.

Daughters of American Revolution local chapter to host meeting Feb. 9

HUNTINGTON -- Buford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its next meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Cabell County Public Library in downtown Huntington.

Winning essays by High School and Middle school students will be read. Certificates and medals will be awarded.

The topic for the middle school essays is "Forgotten Patriots Who supported Americas Struggle for Independence." The high school topic is "How the Faith and Courage of Christopher Columbus Gave Mankind a New World."

Fairland West hosting science fair on Feb. 8

PROCTORVILLE -- Fairland West Elementary will host a science fair on Friday, Feb. 8, in the school's gym.

Projects will be judged by professionals from the region's colleges, businesses and industries and is part of the fifth-grade curriculum.

Approximately 125 students will have projects in the fair, which will have an open house at 5 p.m. Awards will be given out at 5:30 p.m.

Students winning superior ratings will be eligible to compete in the Region 14 Science Day Competition at Shawnee State University, in Portsmouth in March.

Marshall set to host annual soul food feast

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University will host its annual soul food feast at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the John Marshall Dining Room on the second floor of the Memorial Student Center.

The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for Marshall students and children can be bought by calling 304-696-6705 or at the door.

The menu includes chittlins', crispy fried chicken, barbecue ribs, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, candied yams, potato salad, cobbler, other desserts and beverages.
