Students take to the court in Special Olympics

Feb. 21, 2013 @ 12:40 AM

WAYNE -- In the quiet cold of winter, more than 150 students from Wayne County's 21 public schools stirred up a lot of noise during the Wayne County Special Olympics on Wednesday.

In a winter take on the event, students participated in a day-long basketball and cheerleading tournament at Wayne High School.

It's a day that marks the culmination of months of effort and practice for the students as well as organizers with the Wayne County Special Olympics and teachers at each of the county's schools, said Wayne High Principal Sara Stapleton.

"This truly gives kids with special needs the opportunity to stand out and shine and to be able to demonstrate their talents and abilities," Stapleton said.
