Man charged in 2011 shooting

HUNTINGTON -- One man was arrested in connection with a 2011 shooting that injured two Ashland men.

Cortland N. Wilmont, 33, was charged with malicious wounding Wednesday evening.

In the criminal complaint filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court, a detective stated Wilmont shot then-32-year-old Joshua Ellis of Ashland with a handgun at 4 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2011, at a residence in the 1200 block of 15th Street. Ellis received a single gunshot wound to his hip, and received lacerations to his head.

The incident occurred during a dispute over an outstanding debt, according to the complaint.

During the incident, Jason Wells, who also was 32 at the time of the incident, was shot, according to police reports.

Neither Wells nor Ellis suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident.

Wells was not named as a victim in the criminal complaint filed against Wilmont on Wednesday.

Wilmont was incarcerated at the Western Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.
