Church hosting free reading camp
HUNTINGTON -- St. John's Episcopal Church in Huntington is hosting a free reading camp Monday through Friday, July 8-12, aimed at young children who are struggling to read.
The camp, for students entering second through fourth grade in August, provides each participant with 15 hours of reading instruction, strategies and skills. It is taught by local teachers.
Students must have been identified as being at least one grade level behind to be eligible for the camp. And, it is open to those who attend public or private elementary schools or who are homeschooled.
The morning hours are spent at six reading stations, where children learn reading strategies, creative writing, phonics, site words, pleasure reading and reading comprehension. After a free lunch, children enjoy recreational games and a field trip.
