Local insurance agent to be honored by NCGU
HUNTINGTON -- A local insurance agent will be inducted into the University of North Carolina Greensboro Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend.
Former NCAA Conference Champion Joseph Stanton will be inducted in Greensboro, N.C., for his wrestling career.
Stanton went 98-25 in his four seasons at UNCG (1994-97). He qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship all four years, the first two at 150 pounds and the last two at 158 pounds. He won two Colonial Athletic Association Conference titles, winning at 150 in his sophomore year and 158 in his junior season and won the Southern Conference Title his senior year. He won 20 or more matches three of his four seasons and was 48-5 in dual match competition during his career.
"This is truly a great honor to be included in my alma mater's Hall of Fame is something I have always dreamed of," Stanton said in a press release.
Stanton and his wife Shonda, the current Marshall University softball coach, have two daughters and live in Huntington. He serves as vice president of Thornburg Insurance Agency.
The 2008 ceremonies will be a part of UNCG's Homecoming Weekend festivities and will take part at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro. Stanton will also be honored at half-time of the men's soccer match Saturday evening against Brown University.
