Nick Rahall speaks about Social Security, Medicare

October 09, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., spoke to members of the Huntington Area Chapter of the AARP on Monday evening.

He spoke mostly on Medicare and Social Security, two hot-buttons issues that have senior citizens concerned.

"Social Security and Medicare are the twin pillars of the safety net for working, middle-class families," Rahall said in a statement. "Seniors have peace of mind in knowing that the health and retirement benefits they have worked a lifetime accumulating are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States.

"We must look for ways to strengthen Social Security and Medicare and to build on their successes, while maintaining the ironclad guarantee that seniors rightly expect and that privatization and voucher schemes would most certainly undermine."

The local AARP chapter has more than 300 members and is the largest chapter in West Virginia. The chapter meets at the St. Mary's Center for Education from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of the month, except January.

Chapter dues are $5 per year, with new members accepted anytime. For more information, contact chapter president Dolly Rozzi at 304-733-3656.
