Lawrence airport hosts Spring Fling Fly-In

June 28, 2008 @ 10:30 PM

CHESAPEAKE -- The Lawrence County Airport held its Spring Fling Fly-In on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event was scheduled until 6 p.m., but inclement weather caused an early end.

"We do this for the community. We want to give those that may have never flown before a chance to see the skies," said Lynn Howell, who helped coordinate the event.

Members of the community were taken into the air for $25 each by various local pilots.

Edna Bishop, 78, took her first flight in 30 years for her birthday.

"I decided, 'I'm alive so I'm heading up.' I hope I can do it again sometime, I enjoyed it a lot," Bishop said.

One of the features of the plane ride is the rare view of the Tri-State that many citizens do not get a chance to see.

"I was amazed at how small the river looked, everything just seemed so small from up there," Bishop said.

Michael S. Lakin, the owner of Executive Aviation Services and pilot for Gov. Joe Manchin, was one of the pilots assisting at the Fly-In. His two-person plane took customers into the air and those who wanted were given aerial acrobatic demonstrations.

Lynn Howell's wife Harriet Howell said that she has had lifelong dream to fly, and three-and-a-half years ago she started to fly.

"It really is a great thing to do that we share as husband and wife, it is a really fun hobby," Lynn Howell said.

Bryan Barnett who was recruited as an Air National Guard pilot, took his first solo flight Saturday at the event.

"It was a lot of fun, not as bad as I thought it would be. I wasn't nervous or anything," said Barnett.
