Some definitions:
Apiculture: The raising and care of bees for commercial or agricultural purposes.
Apiary: A place where bees and beehives are kept, especially a place where bees are raised for their honey.
Apiarist: Beekeeper, especially one who cares for and raises bees for commercial or agriculture purposes.

1,080: The number of beekeepers in the state this year.
1,709: The number of apiaries in the state of West Virginia this year.
12,213: The number of bee colonies in the state this year.
$470,000: Value of the honey produced in the state last year.
240,000: Pounds of honey produced last year (by West Virginia beekeepers with five colonies or more).
Plants pollinated by bees in West Virginia
Autumn olive, black locust, tulip poplar, blackberry, basswood, sourwood, sumac, knotweed, wingstem and goldenrod are pollinated for the production of honey.
Bees also are valuable in the pollination of apple trees in West Virginia.
Last year, this state sent 1,400 bee colonies to California to pollinate almonds there.
