Another blue chemical cloud reported in Kanawha County

July 12, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

CHARLESTON -- The state Department of Environmental Protection will continue to monitor a blue, chemical cloud over western Kanawha County, but isn't putting out any public health notices at this time.

Spokeswoman Kathy Cosco said there is nothing about Friday's blue haze to indicate any type of precautionary health measures need to be implemented.

This plume isn't nearly as pronounced as one reported on Jan. 25, said Cosco. That incident was blamed on an unusually strong weather system trapping emissions from a power plant close to the ground.

The plant, American Electric Power's John Amos facility, was cited for pollution violations. But power company officials have challenged the DEP's formal notice of violation.

Another haze reported last month dissipated so quickly that the cause couldn't be determined.

Cosco says officials are still investigating the cause of the latest haze.
