November 25, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington firefighters rescued two residents hanging out of their windows trying to escape the flames inside a burning three-story apartment building located at 625 6th Avenue in Huntington on Tuesday.

Cabell County EMS and the Huntington Fire Department arrived on scene around 4:20 p.m. The fire department responded with several crews and EMS had prepared several stretchers in case there were multiple people injured.

EMS Director Gordon Merry said the two people rescued were treated for smoke inhalation and released. A dog was also rescued from the building.

Fire Chief C. Creig Moore said the fire was out put minutes after crews arrived on scene. Crews did not find anyone else in the building during their primary and secondary sweeps of the building.

Moore said the fire seems to have started on the first floor in the left rear of the building. There was major smoke damage to several apartments throughout the building.

Moore said they are investigating the cause of the fire.
