Amos Plant to sponsor St. Jude Golf Outing

HURRICANE -- Appalachian Power's John E. Amos Plant will sponsor its second annual "Drive For a Cure" golf tournament to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on Sept. 29 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.

In an effort to raise awareness of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases, each hole at the event will be in honor of, or in memory of a St. Jude patient, most of whom are West Virginians.

There will be various contests and prizes including a chance to win $10,000. There will also be a post-tournament buffet, raffles, silent auction and awards.

Putnam County Democrats scheduled to host picnic

POCA -- The Putnam County Democrats will host a picnic from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10 at Poca High School.

Hot dogs, chips, watermelon and beverages will be offered for free.

This is the second stop on the Democrats Goodwill Tour of Putnam County. The tour began July 26 in Bancroft with 200 enjoying food and fellowship.

Humane society set to host fundraisers

TEAYS VALLEY -- You can take advantage of two chances to help some furry friends this Saturday, Aug. 9, when the Putnam County Humane Society will host two fundraisers.

The first is a Pancake Breakfast, from 8-10 a.m. at Applebee's in Teays Valley. For $5, you get pancakes, sausage and a drink.

The second is Pet Portraits. For $15, you get a 20-minute photo session and an 8x10 portrait. Call 304-562-0300 to make an appointment.

Hurricane band to provide yard sale, car wash

HURRICANE -- The Hurricane High School Band will provide a yard sale and car wash from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the high school. Concessions will be available.

Get your car washed, have a snack and pick up some great bargains all while supporting the award-winning Hurricane High Band. Proceeds from the day will help the band fund its 2008 competition season as it presents its new show, "Chain Reactions."

Golf scramble for Winfield girls basketball boosters

POCA -- The Winfield High School girls' basketball boosters and AEP John Amos will host a golf scramble on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Scarlet Oaks Country Club.

A putting contest is planned for 8:15 a.m. with an opportunity to win $2,500. The scramble event will start at 9 a.m. A hole-in-one contest, courtesy of NAPA, will give golfers a chance to win $10,000 or other great prizes on select holes. There will be a $400 cash prize for first place and $200 for second place. Other prizes will be offered in closest to pin, longest drive and a raffle held the day of the event.

The cost is $200 per team or $50 per player. Each golfer will receive a gift and lunch, sponsored by Thomas Memorial Hospital, at the conclusion of the tournament.

Hole sponsorships are available for $125, which includes professional signs printed and placed on various tees. Other sponsorship opportunities include donation of raffle items.

Pre-K class to be offered in Teays Valley

TEAYS VALLEY, W.Va. -- A pre-kindergarten class will be offered at the new elementary school in Teays Valley when the fall term begins.

To be eligible for enrollment, children must be 4 years old prior to Monday, Sept. 1.

Registration is now being accepted and classes will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2. Priority will be given to students who live in the new school zone.

Fibromyalgia group set to meet Monday

SCOTT DEPOT -- The next Fibromyalgia Self-Help Group meeting will be 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at FamilyCare, 301-6 Great Teays Blvd, in Scott Depot. The group will view a DVD on living with fibromyalgia, then hold open discussion.

Show choir to sponsor basket bingo

POCA -- Poca High School show choir, Visual Volume, will sponsor a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Saturday, Sept. 13. at Poca High School. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the games starting at 6 p.m. No basket under $50, and all baskets come with protectors.

The $20 entrance fee buys 20 games plus four optional bonus games for specialty baskets. Concessions will be served.

Real estate investors club forming

HURRICANE -- A real estate investors club is now forming for investors between Charleston and Huntington. A meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12 in Hurricane to discuss what the participants would like to gain from the club and to decide if they would like to affiliate with a national organization.

Nitro women's club hosts basket bingo

NITRO, W.Va. -- The Nitro Women's Club will sponsor a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church activity building located at 22nd Street and 2nd Avenue in Nitro.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with bingo starting at 6 p.m. Parking is available behind the church.

Play 20 games for $25, plus special games will be available for an additional charge. Raffle tickets will be sold for the large hamper basket. Concessions will be available.

Please note: Players must be at least 18 years old.

Proceeds from this event will help fund community activities and scholarships.

Driver safety course to start Aug. 19

HURRICANE -- Forrest Burdette United Methodist will offer an AARP Driver Safety course from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20.

The course consists of two, four-hour classroom sessions taught by volunteer instructor Ted Boggess. Those who complete the course may be eligible for insurance discounts. Light refreshments will be served.

City of Nitro plans events for Harvest Dayz

NITRO -- The city of Nitro will celebrate Harvest Fair Dayz throughout the month of September.

Entry forms are now available for the following events: Baby pageant (ages 6 months-6 years), car and cycle show, booth rentals, craft vendors, antique vendors, pie eating contest participants, horse shoe tournament participants, two on two basketball tournament, 3K walk/5K run, and parade participation.

The Harvest Fair Dayz Baby Pageant will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 in the Nitro High School Auditorium and the winning babies will be featured in the parade to be held on Sept. 13. All other events will take place Saturday, Sept. 13 throughout the City of Nitro and the Nitro City Park. There will also be a city-wide residence and business fall yard decor contest.

Neighborhood yard sale set for Saturday

SCOTT DEPOT -- A Neighborhood Yard Sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Meadow Wood Estates, located near the new Scott Depot I-64 Exit, on Teays Valley Road.

HURRICANE -- The award-winning Hurricane High Red Hot Show Choir is hosting its annual "Big Blowout Summer Yard Sale."

The event will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the high school. There will also be a concession stand and car wash.

Hundreds of costumes from previous shows will also be for sale.

POCA -- International speaker Chet Marshall will lead a speaking seminar, "Just Say KNOW," from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. today at Wellington's of Scarlet Oaks in Poca.

The seminar aims to teach effective communication, whether it's one-on-one or speaking before hundreds.

The seminar costs $179, which includes materials, lunch and snacks.

Winfield show choir hosts bus trip to New York

NEW YORK -- You've voted for him. You've cheered for him. Now's your chance to see Putnam County's Derek Keeling perform as Danny in "Grease" on Broadway.

Winfield High School General Admission Show Choir boosters are sponsoring a "Greased Lightning" bus trip to New York to see the musical on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

It's a one-day trip with no hotel stay. A spot on the trip is $190, which includes an orchestra seating ticket to the show and a seat on the bus.

Participants will get some free time in the city to shop and dine. After the performance, Derek Keeling and possibly other cast members (which include "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks) will meet with the group.

HURRICANE -- Early registration for West Teays Elementary School will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today.

Please be sure to bring your child's birth certificate with raised seal, Social Security card, shot records, and a current utility bill for proof of residence.

Basket bingo to benefit Buffalo High Football

BUFFALO -- Longaberger Basket Bingo to benefit the Buffalo High Football Team will be held today at the Eleanor Town Hall above the Fire Department.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the games will begin at 7 p.m. Prizes will include great baskets, multiple specials and a grand special of 12 place settings of Longaberger Pottery Dishes.

FamilyCare offers free nutritional classes

There's one more chance to take a free Monthly Nutrition Class this summer at FamilyCare in Teays Valley.

Low Cholesterol Choices will be taught from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 13 at FamilyCare, 301-6 Great Teays Blvd. Scott Depot.

Other classes frequently offered at the center include Carb Counting for Diabetics and Low-Salt Choices.
