Gallery hosts national exhibition celebrating miniature art

November 03, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Paintings the size of buildings and walls are obviously impressive, but a local group is hosting a gallery that celebrates the delicate art of painting things very small.

Local artists at the Renaissance Art Gallery are sponsoring the eighth annual National Miniature Exhibition. The show began with an opening reception Sunday.

"Most artists around here are not miniaturists'" said Fern Christian, president of the artists co-op. "It's really difficult for those starting out to paint some intricate detail into such a small space."

Christian said a miniature was defined as a piece smaller than 24 square inches and the subject should be less than one-sixth of its original size.

Peter Barclay of Ceredo said he was impressed by the amount of detail the artists' could fit into such a small space.

"I personally liked a piece that was done in colored pencil. It's so detailed it just looks like it could be photograph," Barclay said. "I think that it's important to come out here and support some of the local art talent that can be seen here. It is really interesting."

Artists from across the country submitted their work to be judged. The winner of the Award of Excellence went to Behzad Fallahi from Esfahan, Iran.

The Renaissance Gallery is a cooperative effort maintained by local artists. The gallery will be shown throughout November.
