Community center set to host school supplies giveaway on Tuesday

August 17, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The A.D. Lewis Community Center will host a free back-to-school supply giveaway from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Bob Martin, director of the A.D. Lewis and Fairfield East community centers, said the center will have notebooks, pencils, rulers, glue sticks and other supplies that will be given out for free as long as supplies last.

There will also be free hot dogs and drinks.

Members of the Eastern Star and the Masons from First Baptist Church will hand out the supplies, which were donated by former Huntington High School basketball star O.J. Mayo, former Marshall University football star Troy Brown and the Big Lots at 14th Street West.

"We are grateful that we were able to get some help from Troy and O.J. They have always been very good to help out," Martin said. "We want the kids to be able to go back without needing to go out and get these things they need to get started with school."

In other A.D. Lewis news, Martin said the last day for A.D. Lewis pool will be Saturday, Aug. 21.

Martin said with the prolonged heat has contributed to an incredible year at the pool with more than 3,000 people visiting over the past 2 1/2 months.

"We had an increase in the number of swimmers and many of the daycares have come by a number of times, so we have been fortunate to have good crowds," Martin said.

Martin said since the center has an air-conditioned game room and dining room, many people from the neighborhoods have come to escape the hottest parts of the day.

"We have especially had a number of older people just come and sit in the air conditioning and were really grateful we were open," Martin said. "This is also the last week for the summer basketball, so we have had a busy, busy summer."
