Campaign trails: Meet the candidates dinner planned for special election
SENATE CANDIDATE DINNER: A dinner for meeting the candidates for U.S. Senate is planned at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Wayne County Republican Headquarters, 4446 Waverly Road in Huntington.
All of the candidates for the race for Sen. Robert C. Byrd's unexpired term have been invited. Sheirl Fletcher, Ken Hechler and Joe Manchin III are candidates in the Democratic primary. Harry C. Bruner Jr., Kenneth A. Culp, Albert Howard, Frank T. Kubic, Lynette Kennedy McQuain, John R. Raese, Daniel Scott Rebich, Thomas Ressler, Mac Warner, and Scott H. Williams are running for the Republican nomination. Jesse Johnson is running unopposed in the Mountain Party primary.

DEMOCRATS MOVING: The Cabell County Democratic Party is moving into its headquarters and is seeking help with the move.
Those interested in helping clean, move tables or hang signs should come to the headquarters, 519 8th St. in Huntington, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1. Those who cannot help are encouraged to give a donation of 8-ounce cans of soda (both diet and regular); 8-ounce hot or cold cups; 12-packs of paper towels; 24-packs of toilet paper; or reams of white copy paper.

AFL-CIO ENDORSEMENT: The West Virginia AFL-CIO's statewide Committee on Political Education (COPE) issued the following candidate endorsements for the upcoming special and general elections:
Special Election U.S. Senate: Joe Manchin III.
General Election U.S House of Representatives: Second District-Virginia Graf; Third District, Nick Rahall.
Supreme Court of Appeals: Thomas E. McHugh.
State Senate Districts: 6th, Truman Chafin.
House of Delegate Districts: 13th, Dale Martin, Brady Paxton; 14th, Cathy Larck; 15th, Jim Morgan, Matthew Woelfel; 16th, Dale Stephens, Doug Reynolds; 17th, Don Perdue, Richard Thompson; 19th, Greg Butcher, Josh Stowers, Ralph Rodighiero.
HECHLER ENDORSEMENT: The Sierra Club, an environmental organization, has endorsed Democrat Ken Hechler for the U.S. Senate in Saturday's primary election.
"I've known Ken for years and admired his work for a better day -- for our people and our land," Regina Hendrix, political chair of the West Virginia chapter, said in a release.
WARNER SIGNS CONTRACT FROM AMERICA: Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mac Warner announced that he has signed the "Contract from America," which promotes individual liberty, limited government, and economic freedom.
Warner is among 140 candidates, elected officials or political leaders to sign the contract.
"I'm proud to sign the Contract," Warner said in a release. "Washington is out of control, spending money we don't have to expand the federal government and limit individual freedoms of its citizens."
